Welcome to TK Ranch Chihuahuas. We are a small family based operation that breed Chihuahua's who are healthy and of sound temperments. Our Chihuahua's are very playful and fun loving pets and or show dogs. Our dogs love to go with us on our trips, they love to play and most certainly love curling up in a basket in front of the TV but preferably on Mom's or Dad's lap.

Chihuahua's are a small dog, that averages to a weight from 3 to 6 pounds full grown. Depending on the bloodlines. Long Coat or Smooth Coat Chihuahua's
are great family pets but need owners who understand that the smaller the Chihuahua the more care is need to ensure its safety. Long Coat Chihuahua's do tend to need a bit more grooming than Smooth Coat Chihuahua's. Grooming your Long Coat Chihuahua once a week should help maintain a healthy coat.
Long or Smooth Coat Chihuahua's love to be active companions and make a great family addition.

The AKC Chihuahua

With its big eyes, big ears, and bigger-than-life attitude, the Chihuahua is the epitome of cocky canine in a petite package. In other words, this pint-sized pet is master of his universe and fears nothing, characteristics that make him a most suitable pet for some people and the worst possible choice for others. But a sudden spurt of popularity as the Taco Bell dog has brought notoriety, and demand for the tough and intelligent dogs has increased.

The Chihuahua has always been popular as a pet for elderly owners and apartment dwellers, so in an era when many breed registrations are declining, the number of Chihuahuas registered annually has increased from 29,860 in 1991 to 38,926 in 1997, an average increase of 1133 registered dogs per year and an overall increase of 30.4 percent. The number is hardly equivalent to the registrations of Labrador Retrievers, the breed with a lock on the number one slot for the past several years, but it has been enough to move the Chihuahua from 16th in popularity to 12th.

Graceful, alert and swift-moving with a saucy expression, Chihuahuas are highly intelligent and should not be underestimated even though small in size. The breed can be any color – solid, marked or splashed and the coat may be long or short. These sassy little dogs are well known as "purse dogs" like the famous Bruiser in the movie Legally Blonde starring Reese Witherspoon.

A Look Back
The Chihuahua’s history is shrouded in mystery, but some believe he originated from the Fennec Fox, a very small animal with big eyes and ears, which could explain the tiny frame, luminous eyes and large ears on the breed today. Chihuahua’s were used in religious ceremonies and were pets to the upper class. The breed derives its name from the Mexican State of Chihuahua, where the earliest specimens of the breed were found.

Right Breed for You?
Chihuahuas are alert dogs with terrier-like qualities. They are good with families if the children are gentle and patient. Because of their small size, they require little exercise and are good city dogs, but can be sensitive to cold temperatures. Smooth coated Chihuahuas need very little grooming due to their short hair. Long coats need occasional brushing but still require minimal grooming.
